Cultivating the Habits at the Heart of Patient Care: Compassion, Vulnerability, & Imagination
The best clinicians know that caring well for patients requires more than technical skill. Yet, too often this “something more” is reduced to ideas about “soft skills” or “bedside manner.” As a result, qualities like empathy, vulnerability, and connection—that is, habits of the heart—are seen as extraneous to the “real” work of patient care. This talk aims to show how habits of the heart are not mere “add ons” to clinical care but are essential to the everyday practice of assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients—and asks us to consider whether and how these habits can be cultivated among current and future clinicians.

Session: How to Begin Your Journey (Mini-GAMER)
Thursday, October 21, 2021 : 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM EST
Pre-Conference: Education Research: How to Begin Your Journey (Mini-GAMER) The Education Leadership Partnership of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is working collaboratively (APTA, ACAPT, and Education Academy) to put recommendations into action that support the development of the next generation of education researchers. An urgent need is to provide guidance to novice researchers in developing competence in the essential building blocks and tools for successful research. Education research needs to move beyond the show and tell or descriptive phase of one (one program, one classroom, one clinic) to research that is grounded in meaningful questions linked with appropriate research designs and conceptual framing that can inform and advance education research in physical therapy. This 1-day, pre-conference workshop will provide opportunities for participants to build on their education research question of interest and engage in a participatory workshop with research mentors that leads to a plan of action for each participant.
Participants: 12(min) - 20(max)
Change leadership: leading for change, leading with change, and leading due to change (ACAPT Leadership Summit)
Thursday, Oct 21, 10:00 - 4:00pm EST (1-hour lunch break from 1-2pm)
This course is sponsored and hosted by the ACAPT Leadership Summit group. Secondary to a multitude of variables including technology, complex social issues, external demands and internal structures, organizations need to rapidly and continually adapt and change. While change management is important, change leadership is critical to an organization’s success and sustainability. In this seminar, participants will identify the key attributes of change leaders and will discuss change leadership as it relates to diversity, respect, equity, and inclusion; succession planning; and crisis management.
